seen as designed mega-analyses, and the necessary databasing, data-sharing and analysis tools are emerging (Keator et al., 2008, 2009; Bockholt et al., 2009). In the following, current limitations in function-location brain mapping are examined, along with strategies for their remediation through data pooling. Following the meta/mega-analysis distinction frequently employed in the fi eld, the advantages and shortcomings of different types of data-sharing based on the type of data used as prime matter for pooling are also discussed. Finally, the different steps for a valid data pooling exercise, from data collection to the selection of suitable analysis methods, are considered.

Pooling fMRI Data: Meta-Analysis, Mega-Analysis and Multi-Center Studies

The quantitative analysis of pooled data from related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments has the potential to significantly accelerate progress in brain mapping. Such data-pooling can be achieved through meta-analysis (the pooled analysis of published results), mega-analysis (the pooled analysis of raw data) or multi-site studies, which can be seen as designed mega-analyse...

Analysis of Resting-State fMRI Topological Graph Theory Properties in Methamphetamine Drug Users Applying Box-Counting Fractal Dimension

Introduction: Graph theoretical analysis of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data has provided new measures of mapping human brain in vivo. Of all methods to measure the functional connectivity between regions, Linear Correlation (LC) calculation of activity time series of the brain regions as a linear measure is considered the most ubiquitous one. The strength of the dependence obl...

High resolution data analysis strategies for mesoscale human functional MRI at 7 and 9.4 T

The advent of ultra-high field functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has greatly facilitated submillimeter resolution acquisitions (voxel volume below (1mm³)), allowing the investigation of cortical columns and cortical depth dependent (i.e. laminar) structures in the human brain. Advanced data analysis techniques are essential to exploit the information in high resolution functional mea...

Evaluation of Sensory Pathways in Spinal Cord by Comparison of fMRI Methodologies

Introduction: Today, clinicians and neuroscientists need to have a comprehensive survey of neurological pathologies and injuries. For the First-time, SEEP contrast and Spin-Echo pulse sequences was used for functional imaging of the Lumbar spinal cord. This method used by several research groups for Spinal cord mapping, but other researchers tried to improve BOLD fMRI to Spina...

Uses, misuses, new uses and fundamental limitations of magnetic resonance imaging in cognitive science

When blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was discovered in the early 1990s, it provoked an explosion of interest in exploring human cognition, using brain mapping techniques based on MRI. Standards for data acquisition and analysis were rapidly put in place, in order to assist comparison of results across laboratories. Recently, MRI dat...
